Abstract

The success or failure of governance in any regime in power is basically determined by the quality of leadership of such administration. The study of the connection between leadership and good governance for national development has become essential with the restoration of democratic governance in Nigeria. In the first ten years of Nigeria Fourth Republic, leadership and good governance has faced a number of problems. Political leadership has been severely hampered by corruption, electoral fraud, resource mismanagement, and underdeveloped infrastructure. This paper examines the failure of governance and the challenges of leadership for national development in Nigeria. It also x-rayed the concepts of leadership, good governance and development. The method of data collection for this work is secondary data. The paper recommended the use of electronic voting systems and the demonstration of material and human security as solutions to problems. Others include removing the immunity provision for those holding political office and reorienting the country. The paper concluded that transparent, committed and transformational leadership is highly required for good governance and sustainable development in Nigeria.
