Abstract<\/h2>\n

Objective: Child abuse has short and long term consequences. Literature that explores the long term effect of child abuse on children has been reviewed.
\nSetting: Prevalence of the long term consequences of child abuse within the Australian paediatric population.
\nSample: The search utilised medical search terms of \u2018child abuse\u2019, \u2018long term effects\u2019, \u2018adverse childhood events\u2019, \u2018violence\u2019, \u2018cortisol response to stress\u2019, \u2018post-traumatic stress disorder\u2019, \u2018nurs*\u2019, \u2018paediatric\u2019, \u2018abuse\u2019, \u2018neglect\u2019 and \u2018prevention\u2019 in health related databases to locate literature published from 2007 until present.
\nPrimary argument: Data concerning child abuse and neglect in Australian children is sparse and inconsistent with no literature found specifically relating to the role of paediatric nurses.
\nConclusion: Further analysis on the effects of child abuse and neglect on Australian children will help to gauge its health burden on the country, and to help health professionals better understand this contemporary child safety concern. <\/p>\n
