Abstract<\/h2>\n

This research examines Military Coup D\u2019etats and its legacies in The Gambia. The Gambia experienced two military coups under the leaderships of Kukoi Samba Sanyang and Yahya A.J.J Jammeh, which had landmarks achievements in the country\u2019s polity and trajectory of development. The first military Coup took place on31 July 1981, while the second military coup was on 22nd July 1994. For the first military coup in 1981 under Kukoi Samba Sanyang, it led to the formation of the Senegambia Confederation and the establishment of the Gambia National Army (GNA).  In the same vein, the Yahya Jammeh\u2019s military coup of 1994 was a turning point in the sociopolitical and economic development history of The Gambia, as it brought a total transformation of the socio-political and economic system of the country, such as the establishment of key infrastructures ranging from; education, health, agriculture, roads, telecommunications and new government institutions that strengthened the process of governance in the country. On the other hand, Yahya Jammeh\u2019s military government has been very controversial sometimes and had left many questions unanswered regarding the military\u2019s understanding and approach to some of the key principles of democracy as a governance system such as respect for and application of human rights and fundamental freedoms, respect for the rule of law, separation of powers and judicial independence.Using both primary and mainly secondary sources, the author assessed the two military coups in The Gambia and its lasting legacies and sustainable impacts in the country. It used content analysis to arrive at the findings and conclusion. This research finds out that despite the hue and cry about military coups and governance in The Gambia, there have been breakthrough achievements in the country. The research concludes that, viewing critically the two military coups in The Gambia under the microscope of economics of development and their numerous fallouts in the country, the two coups had left permanent imprints in the sands of time in the political landscape and the sustainable development of the country.<\/p>\n
